Police have warned the public that there may be incidents of fraud, robbery, looting and abuse while traveling through offline ride sharing. In a video message on Wednesday, the District Police Range Kathmandu urged people not to travel as ‘offline rides’ are unsafe.
Kathmandu Police is taking action against those riders who are involved in offline service through Ride Sharing apps. The cases of robbery, accident and even is increasing due to offline ride sharing. This is a huge issue and we request everyone not to go offline while using these services as it may not be safe.
According to the police, if an accident occurs while traveling without using the official mobile app, insurance claims cannot be made and the risk of criminal incidents is also high. When traveling directly without using the ride service provider’s app, no details of the driver and vehicle are recorded in the system.
The police have stated that if a criminal incident occurs against a passenger due to the lack of details, it will be very difficult to identify the culprit and bring them to justice. In addition, it has been clarified that if an accident occurs without a record in the system, the passenger will be deprived of the legal insurance benefits.
To reduce criminal incidents and ensure safe travel, the police have directed that rides be booked only through the mobile apps of legally registered companies. Passengers have been advised to start the journey only after fully verifying the vehicle details shown on the app and the number plate of the vehicle that has come to pick them up.
Similarly, the police have also urged people to check the physical condition of the vehicle before boarding it and to keep the location of their mobile phone on throughout the journey. The police have requested that people compulsorily share the details of their ride and location with their relatives or close friends, keeping in mind the security sensitivity, especially when traveling at night or on deserted roads.
