New feature of Android 16, desktop experience from your phone

Google has announced that it will bring desktop mode to its much-awaited Android 16. The company gave an early glimpse of the feature at Google I/O 2025. Developed in collaboration with Samsung, the mode is said to be inspired by the DeX experience. Samsung launched DeX with the Galaxy S8 series in 2017. According to this, as the phone's screen gets bigger, its interface and apps can be converted into a desktop-like format.

In the video presented by Google, the interface of Android's desktop mode looks similar to Chrome OS. In which various apps like Gmail, Chrome, YouTube, Google Photos are pinned to the taskbar at the bottom. Similarly, the time is visible in the upper left corner of the screen, and the Wi-Fi signal and battery are visible on the right.

The demo showed the adaptive apps that will be included in Android 16, and the features that can be used to spread and move those apps across the screen were shown.

Google has confirmed that windowing capabilities will be improved in this mode and that adaptive apps will automatically scale to desktop mode, Android Automotive, and Android XR.

In a blog post about the update, Google said that Android 16 will ensure that apps run smoothly on foldables, tablets, Chromebooks, mixed reality wearables, and vehicles.
